DESCRIPTION
This course will be an advanced inquiry into the study of terrorism and
political violence.  It is about the definitions, acts, symbols,
representations, ramifications and mediation of terrorism in its many
forms. A variety of theoretical approaches will be investigated to empower
students to be able to analyze the current literature and assess the strengths and weaknesses of contending explanations and prescriptions.  Examples will be derived from various sub-fields within the discipline:  U.S. politics, comparative politics, and international relations, and from related disciplines (e.g. sociology, economics, cultural studies, media studies, psychology). Students will demonstrate their understanding of the practical, policy perspectives on terrorism, counter-terrorism, or political violence in general, through a research project.
